The Great Divider

I don’t read the New York Times anymore since they had the audacity to charge money for their content (!) but I caught this editorial from yesterday and it is spot on. I hear there is an election forthcoming and while we don’t get to vote out Mr. Bush, unfortunately, there is still plenty that can be achieved with proper voting skills. The NY Times, meanwhile, describes life under “The Great Divider” in vivid tones:

In Mr. Bush’s world, there are only two kinds of Americans: those who are against terrorism, and those who somehow are all right with it. Some Americans want to win in Iraq and some don’t. There are Americans who support the troops and Americans who don’t support the troops. And at the root of it all is the hideously damaging fantasy that there is a gulf between Americans who love their country and those who question his leadership.

For the record, I think we should have “cut and run” a long time ago. By “a long time ago” I mean before we hit Baghdad. No, even before that. I support my troops so much that I wish them all alive and never inside the boundaries of Iraq. But that is all lost. Impressive, that Mr. Bush has actually made a country less safe and stable than under an evil dictator. That’s hard work, as he likes to say. Why, 1272 Iraqis died in October alone, along with 104 U.S. soldiers, and that is the price we pay for bringing democracy to a country that never asked for it. Well, some pay the price, while others march on with divisive rhetoric designed to hold onto positions of power. All for another month of bloodshed, another month of failed policy, another month of staying a lost course (wait, we’re not using those words anymore, are we?).

I won’t hold my breath that American voters will change that course, I’ve been let down before and here we are, six years in (just like this Cabinet) and still going the wrong way. How much shit can you put up with before you stand up and say no? Like a battered woman who keeps coming back for more, so goes the Fall of the American Empire.
